Who is God?
If you accept the existence of God, the next logical question is “Who is God?” We can say that there is a God by looking at creation and our conscience. Don’t we want to have a relationship with that God? That is who God is! God is not just the creator of the universe, but also someone who wants to have a relationship with us.
We know this through Revelation, namely, the gift God gives us of God’s very self. When Moses asked, “If I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what do I tell them?” God replied to Moses: I am who I am. Then he added: This is what you will tell the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you” (Ex. 3:13-14). God gave Moses his name, which really wasn’t a name, but rather, something more mysterious. It is a statement of existence and relationship. The name Yahweh, is emblematic of God’s gift of life and love to us. God is and we are because God is.
But God wanted to do more than just reveal his name. God wanted to reveal himself to us, and thus sent his only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is God. The name Jesus comes from the Hebrew, which means, “God saves”. Jesus is the incarnate God, the image of the Father, sent by the Father to save us from our sins and to bring us to everlasting life with God in heaven. The Father and the Son sent the Holy Spirit so that we may become holy.
So, who is God? God is the one who loves us into existence and communion with him forever. God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; a community of loving persons, one in divinity; the Trinity. “God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him” (1 Jn. 4:16).
